Scrolling through my phone tonight, I noticed I had prepaid balances sitting at seven or eight different businesses: 86 yuan at a coffee shop, 42 at a bubble tea place, over 300 at the barber, and the car wash was even worse—I still have half of the 500 yuan I paid in last year.
When I topped them up, they all seemed like great deals: add 100 yuan, get 20 free; add 500, get 100 free. It felt like free money. The most awkward one is the barber shop. Not long after I topped up, the barber I usually went to quit. The shop is still there, but every visit feels like I’m spending my own money on a stranger.
Now I have a rule for myself: I only top up enough to use within a month, no matter how much extra they offer. Money is only convenient when it’s in your own hands.
