Elon Musk takes aim at Binance’s dominance and discusses a monopoly hindering crypto’s rise
Musk believes Binance’s control of around 80% of the trading market gives a single platform enormous influence over the cryptocurrency industry. But his argument doesn’t stop there. Binance’s huge market share raises questions about competition. Users moving to other exchanges could boost competition. Increased competition could pave the way for broader liquidity and a wider distribution of activity. This view holds that a more competitive market could help create the conditions for a new rally. The more liquidity and trading volume are concentrated on a single platform, the greater its influence on the market structure. But money moving between platforms does not automatically mean new liquidity is entering crypto.
Has the dominance of a single platform become a problem for an industry worth trillions of dollars, or is Binance simply a platform that succeeded by offering traders what they want?
