🚨 The KOL you’ve been copying may be selling to you through a burner account

On November 6, on-chain analytics firm Bubblemaps posted a direct accusation: a top KOL had been quietly siphoning millions of dollars from their own followers—and “the identity will be revealed soon.”

The scheme it described isn’t complicated: buy through a public wallet for everyone to see, enticing people to copy the trade; make the real sales through several other addresses. Once followers are in, the KOL still collects referral fees—and still sells their tokens.

An even harsher line: “Side wallets have become a business model.”

Bubblemaps also pointed the finger at launchpads: affiliate kickbacks, paid promotions, and leaderboards ranked by trading volume all incentivize generating traffic, while doing little to check for linked wallets and hidden holdings. Leaderboards bring in an audience—and the audience is liquidity.

It cited one previously disclosed case: Pump.fun influencer Ethan was involved in 49 token promotions, earning about $125,000 in related proceeds—$45,000 from trading profits and $80,000 from promotion rewards. Those wallets would typically start selling within three minutes of a promotion.

What’s really worth paying attention to isn’t any one influencer, but the structure: when the “wallet everyone sees” can be separated from the “actual position,” transparency becomes a tool for putting on a show.

To be clear: for now, these are still “allegations.” Bubblemaps hasn’t named anyone or released a complete list of addresses. It’s calling on launchpads to investigate linked wallets and ban repeat offenders.
