ByteDance plans to expand its data center project in Brazil
Nov. 7 — ByteDance is considering expanding a data center project in northeastern Brazil, a move that would further strengthen its position as a leading builder of computing infrastructure in Latin America.
People familiar with the matter said ByteDance is seeking a developer to handle the second phase of its data center project at the industrial port of Pecém in the state of Ceará. The project entitles ByteDance to tax incentives on data exports.
The expansion will be larger than the project currently under construction in Ceará, which involves an investment of $10 billion and has a capacity of 300 megawatts, according to people familiar with the matter. ByteDance is also in preliminary talks with developers about a similarly sized data center outside Pecém that would serve local customers in Brazil. The data center at Pecém must export data to qualify for tax exemptions.
