The Democrats won both chambers, but not a single new rule has taken effect. Data center stocks took the first hit. On Thursday, the Nasdaq fell 5.5%, wiping out about $1 trillion in value from the Magnificent Seven. On Friday, stocks bounced back: Micron rose 5.12% and IREN 20.02%.

The market is doing the math on electricity bills. Shenwan estimates that electricity costs account for 1.3% of total AI project investment, or about $9.6 billion industry-wide as a one-time cost. Big tech companies can absorb it; the pressure falls on emerging cloud providers borrowing money to expand their data centers. For CoreWeave, electricity costs rose from 6% to 14% of operating income.

Texas governor-elect Hinojosa said expansion would be paused until the relevant legislation is passed. Sanders’s pause bill had only 11 co-sponsors. The House passed the Electricity Ratepayer Protection Act 417–3, while the Senate vote was 57–43, three votes short.
