China’s space station has just completed the world’s first precision laser-cutting test outside a spacecraft! At an altitude of 400 km, under extreme temperature swings and high vacuum, teams from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Eighth Academy of CASC achieved micron-level, recoil-free laser cutting using 8+2-axis vision guidance and teleoperation. Many people have missed the profound shift in the underlying asset logic: for the past 60 years, satellites have been classic disposable assets—if a micrometeorite punctures one and causes a short circuit, the entire satellite is scrapped and its value drops to zero. But in-orbit servicing and manufacturing (OSAM) effectively brings a proxy-contract hot-upgrade mechanism to physical space infrastructure. As low-Earth-orbit computing constellations and space-based DePIN networks take off, whoever masters micron-level, non-destructive in-orbit maintenance will be able to extend the depreciation cycle of costly space hardware severalfold, fundamentally rewriting the valuation models for space-based computing and on-chain RWA infrastructure.
