Greece’s parliament passes crypto tax law: investors with annual net gains above €500 will be taxed at 10% on their total gains.
The rule applies from January 1, 2027. Income from staking, crypto lending, and providing DeFi liquidity will be taxed separately at 15%. The parliamentary Scientific Service warned that the bill’s wording on “disposals for consideration” is too broad and could bring crypto-to-crypto swaps within the scope of taxation. It recommended explicitly exempting swaps and clarifying the rules for stablecoins; the government had previously said that swaps should not trigger capital gains tax.
· The tax threshold is €500 in net gains, but the taxable base is total gains, not just the amount above the threshold.
· Whether swaps are taxable remains disputed. Finance ministry officials say guidance on transparency and audits will be issued in the coming weeks.
Are you more concerned about the scope of the swap exemption, or about which income falls under the 15% rate?
