U.S. Treasury cracks down hard: $16 billion in illicit transactions; MEXC Global banned

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued an order prohibiting U.S. financial institutions from transferring funds to or from cryptocurrency exchange MEXC Global. FinCEN stated that MEXC was involved in at least $16 billion in illicit transactions between May 2021 and May 2026, including $1.5 billion in transactions related to Russian sanctions evasion and $1 billion in direct transactions with Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges. FinCEN stressed that MEXC had serious deficiencies in its anti-money laundering controls. The order will take effect within 30 days of its publication in the Federal Register.
