A few signs before a meme coin takes off
I only pay attention to a meme coin if it has independent buying pressure; otherwise, I treat it as volatility.
I measure sentiment by price changes, not by buzz in chat groups.
PEPE 0.00000505 (+4.55%), DOGE 0.0728 (+0.10%), SHIB 0.00000458 (+0.00%), WIF 0.1657 (-0.06%)
For comparison: BTC 75918 (24h -0.32%).
PEPE is up +4.55% over 24h, clearly outperforming BTC at -0.32%, which suggests independent buying pressure. But BONK is only at -0.35%, so there’s no sector-wide resonance. I’m only playing the leader, not betting on a catch-up rally.
If the gap between the leader and the weakest coin narrows to within 2 percentage points, independent buying pressure has disappeared, and I’ll close the position.
Data: Binance spot 24h / Binance USDⓈ-M / Yahoo daily (5-day change) / altme_fng / mempool_fees / defillama_chains / coingecko_trending. Missing figures are left blank.
Are you sitting in cash and waiting for a pullback, or are you already on board?

Key takeaway: OI is the notional value of open positions, not trading volume.
Insight: When the top traders’ long/short ratio is significantly higher than the all-account ratio, you can follow the direction, but don’t go all in.
