A hacker’s threat email brought an exchange to a complete standstill.
South Korea’s GOPAX first suspended deposits and withdrawals this afternoon, then halted trading, canceled all unfilled orders, and moved assets into cold wallets. Note: it wasn’t hacked. After receiving a threat email, it hit the pause button on its own. The threat hasn’t been verified, and no resumption time has been announced.
It’s only been a week since Binance lost $6.3 billion to a hack, and South Korean regulators had just called for a higher cold-wallet ratio. GOPAX’s cold-wallet share is 80.54%, just over the 80% threshold. One email was enough to make the exchange pull the plug.
Would you rather the exchange you use act just as decisively, or keep going and try to weather it?
