This BTC downturn looks more like a chain reaction of “tech-stock panic — ETF redemptions — futures liquidations” than an on-chain risk event. This assessment depends on ETF flows and leverage data explaining most of the decline; if on-chain anomalies or stablecoin depegging emerge, it will need to be revised.
First, the facts. PANews reported that the Nasdaq closed down about 5.5% on November 5, while BTC fell from around $80,300 to an intraday low of about $75,200. Over $1 billion in positions were liquidated in 24 hours, nearly 90% of them longs. From October 30 to November 5, BTC ETFs saw combined net outflows of about $1.5 billion, including over $430 million on November 5. CoinDesk also reported that BTC briefly fell below $76,000 after a tech-stock selloff, with ETF outflows of about $430 million that same day. The two sources corroborate the chain of “tech stocks falling, ETF outflows, and leverage amplifying the move.”
My observation is that the mechanism matters more than the narrative. Spot ETFs directly connect sentiment in U.S. equities to marginal demand for BTC: institutional selling first shows up as ETF redemptions; weakening prices then trigger liquidations of highly leveraged longs, creating a second leg down. This also explains why gold edged up that day while BTC moved with the Nasdaq — at the time, it was trading as a risk asset, not “digital gold.”
As for possible scenarios, if daily ETF outflows narrow, funding rates turn positive, and open interest declines, that would suggest deleveraging is nearing its end and the decline may ease. If tech stocks continue falling and ETFs see consecutive net outflows, the correlation is likely to persist. The indicators to monitor are daily net flows into BTC ETFs, perpetual futures funding rates, changes in open interest, and short-term correlation between BTC and the Nasdaq.
