The market’s down this badly today, and the worst part isn’t what’s on paper—it’s that my phone won’t stop ringing.
My uncle called around noon and opened with, “So, is all your crypto gone?” I said it wasn’t all gone. He asked how much was left, and I said it was hard to calculate. He paused for two seconds and said, “So it’s gone, then.” After hanging up, I stood on the balcony for ten minutes. It wasn’t that I was upset about the money—I just didn’t know where to begin explaining.
My mom was even more direct that night. She asked whether what I do for a living really counts as a proper job. I said it does. She said, “Then why do you frown every time you look at your phone?”
There’s not much I can do. When prices are going up, nobody asks me about it. When they’re falling, everyone suddenly cares. And the way they show they care just makes me feel a little worse.
It’s not like I haven’t thought about not checking, but if I really turn it off, I’ll just keep thinking about it. Whatever. If it falls, it falls. I’ll still have to check tomorrow.
