BNB Chain announced that BEP-706, included in the Jenner hard fork upgrade, will deploy a new precompiled contract at address 0x70 to provide smart contracts with block timestamps accurate to the millisecond. Previously, contracts could only read timestamps accurate to the second via block.timestamp, preventing them from distinguishing time differences between multiple blocks generated within the same second. After the upgrade, developers will be able to access timestamps in milliseconds via the new interface, while existing block.timestamp values and second-based timing logic will remain unchanged. This feature enables use cases requiring sub-second precision, such as settling quotes that are valid for only a few hundred milliseconds, auction deadlines, and verifying how quickly price oracle data is updated. The new precompiled contract incurs a computation cost of 20 Gas, plus call and memory costs.
