🚨 The anti-crime coalition that froze $450 million disbanded two months before it was truly needed

Bloomberg reports that the T3 Financial Crime Unit shut down at the end of August. The group—made up of Tether, Tron, TRM Labs, and a leading exchange—operated for about two years.

Feedback from members was blunt: over the past year, the group had been held back by “slow response times and poor coordination.” Tron, Tether, and TRM Labs all confirmed to Bloomberg that the group had closed; the exchange declined to comment. Its official X account, which had more than 1,400 followers, was also deleted.

📊 Its track record was actually pretty good. In May 2026, T3 said that since its launch in September 2024, it had frozen more than $450 million in illicit USDT. It intercepted 43.9% more illicit proceeds in 2025 than in 2024, and its law-enforcement partnerships covered 23 jurisdictions.

🔸 After the record-breaking theft on October 29, the exchange’s founder publicly called for an industry-wide security alliance: share attack methods, audit findings, and lessons learned, and coordinate to freeze assets faster. Those proposals were almost identical to T3’s original goals.

💡 What really matters isn’t the $450 million frozen, but what it takes for an alliance like this to survive. Freezing assets depends on “who spots a suspicious address first and who can respond within an hour”—which means members have to give up some information and decision-making power. Slow responses and poor coordination aren’t execution problems; they’re structural problems: it’s hard for competitors to make way for one another.

⚠️ Other approaches are underway, too: Tether says it will continue working with TRM Labs, which launched the Beacon Network in 2025 for real-time intelligence sharing. Tron has also previewed a “new initiative.” The alliance is gone, but the work continues.

📌 So when you hear “a call to form an alliance,” the key isn’t the slogan but the terms: who shares data, who has the authority to freeze assets, and who’s responsible if something goes wrong?

Do you think a cross-organization security alliance can move faster than the risk controls within a single company?
