On November 6, the Financial Times reported that an advertisement for Solana on the exterior wall of the Citigroup Tower in Lujiazui, Shanghai, and the planned in-person event “Solana Accelerate China 2026” were called off before they began. An official from a relevant department of the People’s Bank of China said that, together with local financial, public security, and market regulation authorities, they had called a halt to the activities and would investigate the organizations and individuals involved.

The classification is clear: $SOL is essentially a virtual currency. Solana also provides technical services for the issuance and trading of virtual currencies such as $USDT. These all constitute illegal financial activities under the February notice issued by eight government departments this year, and placing advertisements to promote them is also a violation.

The focus now is on what comes next: domestic traders and domestic affiliates of overseas platforms. Enforcement is shifting from the exchanges themselves to the companies and individuals that place ads, organize events, and establish a local presence for overseas public blockchains. Domestic teams that take on this kind of work now face risks that are no longer ambiguous.
