On November 6, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the creation of the “Superintelligence Task Force” (DOJ-SITF), targeting foreign governments and their agents, transnational criminal organizations, and companies and individuals using AI for fraud and cyberattacks.

This week, the OCC released its first AI framework, and the SEC added “superintelligence” to its 2027 examination priorities. Enforcement, bank regulation, and securities regulation are all moving at once. Federal AI oversight has moved from issuing frameworks to pursuing cases.

For the crypto world, AI-driven fraud and cyberattacks are the cases most likely to fall within this task force’s remit. Going forward, such cases will probably be handled by the task force. But the DOJ has given no timeline and has not explained how the work will be divided with Jay Clayton, chair of the SI Force. For now, what we can see are individual cases, not rules.
