Zcash ($ZEC ) activated NU7 on mainnet at block 3 543 405, at 02:34 UTC on 6/11 (CoinDesk / The Block / ZecStats).
Before: the target block time was 75 seconds. With ZIP 218, the target drops to 25 seconds. Around 04:59 UTC, ZecStats (via CoinDesk) still counted about 225 blocks averaging ~39 s, as difficulty was still adjusting.
In the same upgrade, the Network Sustainability Mechanism directs 60% of transaction fees to a public reserve (reissuance planned around 2031) and 40% to miners, without changing the 21 M ZEC cap. The Sprout pool is being retired: about 12 224 ZEC remain unspendable there (CoinDesk).
In terms of capacity, the specification estimates more than 6 simple private payments per second versus ~3 previously, and a reduction in wallet scan load from 271 to 169 MB/day in the worst case. For an exchange requiring 3 confirmations, the theoretical wait falls from about 4 minutes to ~75 seconds once the target is reached.
On Binance spot around 09:50 UTC on 6/11, $ZEC quotes ~1 282 $ (−3.1% / 24 h) while $BTC remains around 76 086 $ (−5.3%).
Two takes: if difficulty converges quickly to 25 s, the private-payment UX could genuinely improve; if adjustment drags on and volume stays thin, activation will remain mostly technical.
Does $ZEC hold up better than the risk tape after NU7 goes live, or does the price remain glued to BTC?
