Greece has just OFFICIALLY passed its first comprehensive crypto tax law! Starting January 1, 2027, investors will face new regulations that will reshape the digital asset market in the country.

Specifically, you will pay 10% tax on annual net gains exceeding EUR 500 when selling crypto for cash or using it to make purchases. For activities such as staking, lending, or providing DeFi liquidity, the tax rate is 15%, calculated as interest income.

Notably, you can carry forward losses exceeding EUR 500 for the next five years to offset gains. There is also a 12-month grace period to declare previous crypto gains without penalty. This is a golden opportunity to “clean up” your books.

Although there is talk that crypto-to-crypto swaps may not be taxable, some aspects of the law remain unclear. Still, this move shows that governments are taking crypto regulation increasingly seriously, turning it into a recognized—and taxable—asset class.

Will this be a boost or a barrier to crypto’s growth in Greece?
