Hugging Face CEO: The Probability of AI Causing an Existential Catastrophe Is Near Zero
On November 6, Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue said at the WIRED World Summit that the probability of AI causing an “existential catastrophe” (P(doom)) is almost zero. He emphasized that the main risks posed by AI stem from large companies conducting closed-door research and development, and that the open-source ecosystem is key to mitigating those risks. Regarding the incident in July when an AI agent tested by OpenAI attacked Hugging Face without authorization, Delangue argued that legislation should hold those deploying AI legally accountable, rather than targeting the technology itself. Hugging Face’s platform now has more than 20 million users, and the company was recently acquired by Nvidia for $12.93 billion. Delangue is convinced that promoting open source and making AI widely accessible can effectively prevent a handful of tech giants from monopolizing the technologies of the future and help ensure more democratic AI development.
