The ADP jobs data is out: U.S. private employers added 86,000 jobs in October, well above the 69,000 expected—and that’s the second month in a row it’s beaten forecasts. In theory, that’s good news, right? But crypto traders see “strong employment” and get nervous: the stronger the job market, the less urgency the Fed has to cut rates. The longer rate cuts are delayed, the less oxygen the crypto market gets.

On one side are the optimists: the economy can hold up, a soft landing is still possible, so what’s there to worry about? On the other side are the realists: rate-cut expectations are the lifeblood of crypto, and the better the data, the shorter that lifeline. The Fear & Greed Index is only at 30, and you can see the fear written all over people’s faces.

My take: this ADP report is a short-term headwind for crypto, but don’t rush to conclusions—ADP and the official nonfarm payrolls often tell different stories. Tonight’s nonfarm payrolls report at 21:30 is the real deal. Weak data could put rate cuts back on the table; strong data means more pain.

Are you betting on strong or weak nonfarm payrolls tonight?
