U.S. stocks took another hit last night, with the Nasdaq leading the way down. Worries about the money being burned on AI infrastructure, combined with disappointing chip earnings, sent tech stocks to their knees first. Crypto didn’t escape either: Binance’s market overview on the Plaza showed a total market cap of $2.57 trillion, down 4.78% in 24 hours, with $98 billion in trading volume and a Fear & Greed Index of 34—still firmly in fear territory.
Values shown on the page: ETH is at $2,229 now, up from $2,216 when I posted this morning. It’s caught its breath a little, but it hasn’t gotten back on its feet. SOL is at $89.27, with a market cap of $52.7 billion. Put simply, crypto is following U.S. stocks around right now: when they sneeze, we start coughing too.
On one side are the dip-buyers: “It’s already fallen so much. Once tonight’s nonfarm payrolls come out, even slightly weak data could put rate cuts back on the table. If you don’t get in now, what are you waiting for?” On the other side are the risk-averse: “U.S. stocks haven’t even stopped bleeding, so why should crypto rally first? That rebound around $80K already proved it was a bull trap. Rushing to buy the dip is just handing money to the bears.”
My take: short-term, the market is still choppy with a bearish bias. If U.S. stocks don’t stop falling, assets like ETH and SOL are unlikely to make moves of their own. At $2,229, it looks like ETH is catching its breath, not reversing trend.
What would make me admit I’m wrong? If nonfarm payrolls come in weak at 9:30 p.m. tonight, rate-cut expectations return, U.S. stocks rebound overnight, and BTC climbs back above $80K on strong volume, then my bearish take is out the window. I’ll own it.
What about you? Before tonight’s nonfarm payrolls, are you already lying low and playing dead, or are you itching to buy the dip?
