NU7 Activation Height Near|Sprout Restrictions Are Not Token Burning|Caution Near $1,300 for ZEC; Wait for On-Chain Confirmation
My stance is cautious: I would not interpret “$16 million in ZEC unable to be transferred” as a sudden supply burn. The current topic on Binance Square is “#Zcash expects NU7 upgrade to leave $16 million in ZEC unable to be transferred.” ZIP 259 sets the NU7 mainnet activation height at 3543405; shortly before writing, Blockchair’s latest best block was 3543400, five blocks short of the target, though the data may be delayed. Whether activation has actually occurred must be confirmed by checking the chain tip and consensus status on compatible nodes, not by counting down based on time alone. The Zcash Foundation’s Zebra 7.0.0 notes also list the same height.
It is even more important this time to look at the nature of the assets behind the trending topic. ZIP 2003 states that v4 transactions will no longer be valid after NU7; Sprout transfers can only use v4, so coins still in the pool at that point cannot be spent under the existing rules. The proposal also explicitly states that these coins are not being deducted from the circulating supply or burned; whether a recovery mechanism is introduced in the future would require a separate consensus decision, and no guarantee can be made to holders. It also affects older transparent or Sapling transactions that rely on v4, as well as offline signing workflows. A failed transaction from an old wallet does not mean all ZEC is unwithdrawable; check exchange announcements for withdrawal status.
The “$16 million” figure is an estimated market value calculated by multiplying the Sprout balance at a given point by the current price. It is not a verified, itemized asset disclosure, nor is it the result of a hack. Price changes will affect the dollar valuation; the balance must be verified against the latest on-chain state. NU7 will also reduce the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, with the subsidy per block falling to roughly one-third. Officials say the daily issuance and 21 million cap will remain unchanged. The new rules may improve the confirmation experience, but during the transition, node, wallet, and exchange compatibility risks still need to be monitored.
The market has not expressed a single directional view on this. Kraken’s ZEC/USD pair was trading at about $1,313.16 shortly before writing, with a daily open near $1,279.88, a 24-hour low of $1,209.19, and a high of $1,333.77; the price is above the daily open and not far from the upper end of the range. Meanwhile, Farside’s ZCSH product recorded net outflows of about $11 million on November 5. These two data points coexist, but they do not tell us who is buying or selling, and the upgrade should certainly not be equated with a guarantee of price gains. I’m focused on whether the $1,334 upper level can hold and whether the daily low near $1,278 can hold; if the price breaks below $1,278 and fails to recover, the short-term bullish view is invalidated.
If I were trading it myself: I would stay out for now, with a 0% spot position in ZEC and no leverage. Only if compatible nodes show that the height has passed 3543405 and the chain continues to operate normally, major wallets and exchanges report no issues, and the price holds above $1,334, would I consider a small long position of no more than 1% of total funds. My first target would be $1,380; I’d halve the position as it approaches that level and hold the rest for $1,420, closing if it fails to break through. After entry, I’d reduce the position if the price falls back to $1,310, and immediately stop out and close if it breaks below $1,278 or if officially confirmed risks emerge, such as a consensus fork or withdrawal issues. If all these conditions are not met simultaneously, I’ll keep waiting; a plan that has not been triggered does not count as a trade.
