ZEC upgrade still 77 blocks away | Price rebounds as fund outflows continue | Don’t chase near $1,321

My stance is to wait for confirmation from the mainnet, not chase a rally in the final stretch before the upgrade. Binance Square is abuzz with the claim that “the Zcash NU7 upgrade is expected to leave $16 million worth of ZEC unable to be transferred.” Zcash’s ZIP 259 sets the NU7 mainnet activation height at 3,543,405. When I checked, Blockchair’s on-chain statistics showed a height of 3,543,328, still 77 blocks short of the target. So, as of that check, it was “approaching the activation height”—not that the “mainnet upgrade has already been completed.” Webpage caches and block production speeds can both change, so readers should refer to the live block height and official project status.

The Zcash Foundation’s Zebra 7.0.0 notes say NU7 is intended to reduce the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, allowing the first confirmation to arrive faster. The design for daily ZEC issuance remains unchanged; “three times the block frequency” should not be mistaken for “three times the daily issuance.” After activation, outdated nodes that haven’t upgraded may remain on an incompatible branch, and older transactions will also need to be adapted. For exchanges and wallets, the key question is whether they can reliably construct transactions, sync, and support deposits and withdrawals under the new rules. Whether the upgrade goes smoothly will depend on sustained block production after activation and service announcements.

Kraken’s ZEC/USD price was around $1,321 as I wrote this. The trading day opened at about $1,279.88, with an intraday low of $1,278.23 and high of $1,321.67; over the past 24 hours, the low was $1,209.19 and the high was $1,333.77. The price rose from the day’s open, while Farside’s ZCSH figures showed net outflows of about $11 million on November 5 and net inflows of about $3.4 million on November 4. This shows that the price and a single fund’s daily flows did not move in sync. It doesn’t prove who was buying, nor does it mean the rally can be attributed entirely to the upgrade.

Regarding the claim that “$16 million cannot be transferred,” I still haven’t seen the project team specifically verify that dollar amount, item by item. Official documentation does explain how the rules for older transactions and Sprout funds will change after the upgrade, but the technical rules for a pool and the amount being circulated online are not the same fact. Even if the block height reaches 3,543,405, that does not mean the rumored amount is thereby verified. My key levels to watch are the 24-hour high around 1,334 and the day’s low around 1,278. If the network remains stable after activation, wallet and exchange services operate normally, and the price holds above 1,334, the short-term bullish case becomes more credible. If the upgrade causes a fork or deposit and withdrawal issues, or the price falls below 1,278, the rebound thesis is invalidated.

If I were trading this myself: I wouldn’t enter now. The only direction I’d consider is a small, unleveraged spot long, with 0% of total capital currently allocated. I’d only place a trial trade using at most 1% of total capital once the mainnet block height has passed 3,543,405 and block production has remained normal, the relevant platforms have had no new deposit or withdrawal issues, and ZEC has closed above 1,334 on the one-hour chart and held between 1,310 and 1,334 on a retest. The first target is 1,370, where I’d sell half; the second target is 1,420, where I’d close the rest. After entry, if an hourly candle closes back below 1,290, I’d reduce the position by half; if the price falls below 1,278, I’d stop out and close the entire position. If it falls below 1,278 first, I’d cancel the plan. If none of these conditions are met, I’ll keep waiting.
