What was the idea behind “proof of work,” used in Bitcoin mining, originally designed for?
My understanding: in Bitcoin, rewriting past blocks means redoing the work for all subsequent blocks, making tampering extremely costly.
The Bitcoin white paper mentions Adam Back’s Hashcash in the section introducing proof of work.
The mining mechanism of $BTC follows Adam Back’s Hashcash approach. Current: 76309.01.
