Russia’s largest stock exchange is officially entering crypto — the date is set: December 1.
The facts: On Nov. 2, the Moscow Exchange (MOEX) announced it would open Russia’s first organized digital currency market starting Dec. 1, 2026, with BTC, ETH, and USDT as the first assets (Unchained, CoinMarketCap, news.bitcoin.com, Nov. 3–4). Trading will use the same infrastructure as the stock exchange, with clearing through the National Clearing Centre, trading hours from 06:50 to 23:50 Moscow time, and same-day or next-day settlement. It will initially be a pilot, with participants joining gradually. Non-qualified retail investors will have to pass a test and will be limited to 300,000 rubles (~$3,700) per year per broker.
My take: This is a genuine adoption milestone — BTC sitting on the same screen as Sberbank and Gazprom shares — but it won’t bring a flood of new buyers. The retail limit is very small, the launch is a pilot, and both MOEX and its clearing house remain under US (since June 2024) and EU sanctions. What’s most interesting is USDT: a stablecoin held through sanctioned entities runs up against Tether’s wallet-freezing policy. Meanwhile, BTC is still around $75,900 after last Thursday’s crash.
What I’m watching: whether the Dec. 1 pilot actually launches on schedule, which brokers connect first, and whether the asset list expands after the pilot.
What do you think — is this news more significant as a signal of institutional adoption, or as a warning about sanctions and control?
This is my analysis, not financial advice — always DYOR.
