What is a Layer 0?
It’s the underlying infrastructure on which complete blockchains (Layer 1s) are built. Instead of each project creating everything from scratch, a Layer 0 provides the tools, consensus protocols, and communication capabilities that allow multiple chains to operate together.
Example: Polkadot is a Layer 0. Its Relay Chain is the foundation, and the Parachains (Layer 1s) connect to it, sharing security and communicating with one another without external bridges.
Why does it matter?
It enables scalability and specialization while reducing fragmentation. Each blockchain can focus on its use case (DeFi, gaming, identity) without reinventing the wheel.
Other examples: Cosmos (with IBC), Avalanche (with subnets).
Understanding this architecture helps you see dependencies between projects and follow narratives as an ecosystem grows.
