🚨 The midterm elections made the last two years of Trump's term much harder.
Democrats won the House and the Senate, picking up several Senate seats in Republican states along the way. That means every bill and every nominee Trump wants to appoint now has to go through a Congress controlled by the other party.
Two people hold most of this power: Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, and Hakeem Jeffries, who is about to become Speaker of the House.
Trump told ABC News he hasn't spoken to either of them since the election. Still, he believes they can work together:
“I think we can get along. And if we can do that, it would be good for the country. The country is tired.”
Then he made sure to add:
“I've spoken to other Democrats since the midterms, but not those two. Others. They called me. I have friends in the Democratic Party.”
So, he's offering to work with Democrats, while making clear he doesn't need their leaders to do it.
