OpenAI and Anthropic are both turning to the capital markets for money, giving investors a chance at last to compare the two companies side by side.

Newcomer’s Tom Dotan interviewed investors who have participated in fundraising rounds for both companies and got some strikingly clear assessments:

Anthropic is pulling ahead, while OpenAI is in urgent need of a comeback story.

Even as the AI industry faces valuation pressures and a tightening political climate, investors interviewed remain quite optimistic about Anthropic’s IPO.

One investor who has invested in both companies even said that demand for Anthropic shares from long-term investors such as mutual funds is “infinite.” They believe Anthropic is weathering current market volatility and are confident it can go public before Thanksgiving.

The political climate has done little to dent that confidence. Anthropic is relatively closer to the Democratic camp, but investors haven’t been deterred by that.

The most interesting thing about this fundraising race is that the two companies are courting largely overlapping groups of investors, giving capital a chance to directly compare their growth, commercial capabilities, and future valuations.

Until recently, OpenAI had almost single-handedly represented the AI industry’s leading narrative. Now Anthropic is vying for that position.

Technological leadership can shift over time, but the capital markets will deliver their own verdict with real money.
