Microsoft’s free AI Agents for Beginners course is now open source on GitHub, and you can work through it like a university course. It starts with the basics of what an agent is, then covers tool calling, Agentic RAG, planning, multi-agent collaboration, and metacognition. The second half covers deploying to production, the MCP and A2A protocols, context engineering, and memory management.

Each lesson includes a written tutorial with images, a short video, and Python sample code. The code uses Microsoft Agent Framework and Foundry and requires an Azure account. Some examples can be adapted to use MiniMax.

My take: It’s a free course with the workload of a university class, and Azure is the only real barrier. If you don’t want to link an account, start with examples that let you switch models. Don’t let the first lesson put you off. I’d say the biggest risk with a free course isn’t that it’s hard—it’s that the opening turns people away. Just get started and see how it goes.
