ME News reports that on November 5 (UTC+8), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York announced that 35-year-old Canadian Ryan James Roach was extradited to the United States on October 28. He is suspected of conspiring with another Canadian, Mathiew James Stubbings, to hack into the computers of U.S. educational institutions, steal login credentials, and secretly use their computing power to mine cryptocurrency. Both men have been indicted by a federal grand jury. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Stubbings’s extradition proceedings are still underway in Canada. According to the indictment, the two men allegedly targeted U.S. educational institutions with supercomputers between June 2016 and December 2019. They spread malware and cryptocurrency-mining programs through servers registered under false names in multiple countries, and stored stolen login credentials. The victims were institutions in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Prosecutors allege that within one year, the two damaged at least 10 protected computers, causing losses of at least $5,000. (Source: ME)
