Big news! Hong Kong has just tightened crypto regulations with a new data-sharing law. Starting in 2027, crypto exchanges and service providers will have to collect customer and transaction information.

The key point: this data will be automatically shared with tax authorities overseas starting in 2028, in accordance with the OECD’s CARF framework. The clear goal is to combat cross-border tax evasion and increase transparency.

The new law covers everything from names and addresses to crypto purchases, sales, exchanges, and transfers to external wallets. This is a major step toward global regulatory compliance.

Most importantly, this law does NOT introduce a new crypto tax, nor does it make customer information public. However, it places a reporting burden on crypto providers and requires greater transparency.

How will this affect capital flows and investor privacy? What do you think of Hong Kong’s move?
