OpenAI launches its Images 2.6 image model, letting ChatGPT generate animated GIFs directly.
It’s available starting today on all ChatGPT and Codex subscription plans. Users can generate animations from text or uploaded images, adjust the speed, and edit individual frames. Photos of frequently used people, pets, or characters can also be saved as “reference images” for reuse later.
For developers, two new API models are available: Flare focuses on speed, generating an image in as little as about 6 seconds, while Sunburst focuses on image quality and consistency across multiple rounds of edits. OpenAI says both are 50% faster than the previous version. API prices are unchanged from the previous generation: $30 per 1 million tokens for image generation. The API also adds SVG vector export, so generated images can be used directly on websites, in apps, and in print.
OpenAI says users worldwide generate 4 billion images every week.
