Binance and Polymarket are pushing for a hard fork on the Polygon network to recover approximately $6.8 million in stolen cryptocurrency. Polygon block producers have already taken action and frozen the compromised tokens as an initial containment measure. Now, the proposed hard fork would not only allow those funds to be locked but also returned to their original owners—a technically complex but possible solution in this case. This situation puts the question of how far a blockchain can or should go to reverse transactions at the center of the debate, even with good intentions. It’s worth asking whether these kinds of actions strengthen trust in the ecosystem or, on the contrary, cast doubt on the principle of immutability that makes cryptocurrencies unique.
