On November 5, Sam Altman changed his X display name to Ram Altman, then changed it back a few hours later.
It all started with that October 29 podcast. He said the global DRAM supply was tight, while a huge amount of memory sat in personal computers, idle about 95% of the time. That was a pretty bad state of affairs, and centralizing it in cloud data centers would be more efficient.
The backlash came right away. Gamers were unhappy, and Musk posted a meme with the caption that people have the right to own their own memory, too.
One user took the opportunity to suggest he change his name to Ram Altman. He replied, “Sure, no problem,” and then actually did it. Afterward, he posted several more times to explain, stressing that his words had been taken out of context. His long-standing position, he said, was to expand global memory production capacity so people could install as much memory as they wanted.
The name has changed back, but the numbers on memory haven’t. AI data centers’ appetite for DRAM is squeezing consumer supply, and it’s the pace at which manufacturers like $MU expand capacity that holds the power to determine prices. A CEO can change his display name twice in a few hours; the capacity cycle of a wafer fab is measured in years.
