Expedia beat on revenue and EPS, rising about 10.5% intraday to 315.88, then plunging about 8.3% after hours to ≈289.7 on weak Q4 guidance—I’m not catching this falling knife
What I saw:
Q3 adjusted EPS of 9.39 (Street: about 8.83) and revenue of $4.94B (Street: about $4.73B), up 12% year over year, both beat expectations. But Q4 revenue guidance of $3.69–$3.75B had a midpoint below the Street’s roughly $3.74B, and EBITDA guidance of $830–880M was also somewhat conservative. It closed at 315.88 (+10.5%), then traded at ≈289.7 after hours (about −8.3%), giving back roughly 11% from the intraday high of 326.4. Peer AMZN at ≈266 is still about 4.7% above its MA20.
My take:
They delivered this quarter, but the outlook softened—the intraday move priced in all the optimism, and after hours the guidance shortfall was all that mattered. Even a beat couldn’t stop the giveback.
Watching, not chasing: Let’s talk again if it gets back above the 315.88 close or near the day’s high. If it breaks below the after-hours low of ≈285, the guidance-driven selloff may not be over.
Do you think this is a normal pullback after election-day sentiment has washed out, or will peak-season travel guidance trigger another selloff?
