🚨 French bank with $235 billion in assets loses over $133 million in crypto; bank finally admits it was hacked!
📌 On-chain investigator ZachXBT named French cooperative bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa (with approximately $235 billion in assets) as the suspected victim. Over several days, USDC/USDT was withdrawn from exchange accounts, then converted to ETH and XMR and moved across chains. The actual amount may be higher, including OTC transactions.
📌 Decrypt reported that the bank acknowledged a cyberattack and fraudulent transactions. It said the incident was “closed and under control” and that customer assets were unaffected, but made no mention of cryptocurrency or the amount involved.
📌 Kraken has restricted the related accounts, while Crypto.com says it intercepted the associated funds.
💡 My take:
1️⃣ As traditional banks enter crypto, their security weaknesses can be magnified too. In this case, even exchange accounts became an entry point.
2️⃣ The route of converting funds into ETH and XMR suggests the attackers know how to launder crypto, making recovery difficult.
3️⃣ Exchanges’ ability to detect risk and freeze funds quickly is becoming a key factor for users choosing a platform.
Currently, $BTC is worth about $80,000, and $ETH about $2,420. The market is rebounding, but frequent hacking incidents are a reminder: security always comes first.
Do you think the risks of banks and institutions keeping assets on exchanges are being underestimated? Share your thoughts in the comments 👇
