JUST IN: The European Space Agency has awarded German aerospace company OHB a €554 million contract to develop Europe's next generation of Earth-observation satellites.
The award covers the Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography mission, part of the European Union's Copernicus program, with an option for a second spacecraft.
The satellites will use advanced radar altimeters to measure ocean heights, sea-level changes, ice sheets and coastal conditions from orbit.
Compared with today's Sentinel-3 spacecraft, the new generation is designed to deliver more precise measurements, broader coverage and faster revisit times.
OHB will lead a European industrial consortium responsible for developing the spacecraft, strengthening Europe's independent Earth-observation infrastructure.
The €554 million contract was announced today.
