$XRP
This trade almost cost me $2,300, and even now, thinking about it gives me chills. Here’s what happened: Last month, XRP started climbing from a low of $1.27. I saw the 24-hour trading volume hit $783M and figured money was flowing in, so I chased it at $1.29 with a sizable position of about 18,000 coins. It did go up after I got in, peaking at $1.34. At one point, I was sitting on nearly $900 in paper profits, and I got carried away, thinking it could reach $1.40. I didn’t set a take-profit level at all. Then the next day, chip-stock earnings weighed on the broader market, U.S. stock futures weakened across the board, and XRP plunged from $1.34 back to around $1.27. All my paper profits evaporated, and I was in the red. At the worst point, my account was down more than $2,300. My mistakes were clear: First, I saw a 24-hour change of +2.78% and treated it as confirmation of a trend. But that kind of move is nothing special for a major coin, and $783M in trading volume is just normal for a large-cap token like XRP. I mistook noise for a signal. Second, $1.34 was the 24-hour high, which meant there was selling pressure there. Instead of reducing my position, I fantasized about a breakout—that was pure greed. Third, I paid no attention to macro conditions at all. Systemic risks, like weakening U.S. stock futures, were right in front of me, yet I stubbornly held my entire position. Luckily, XRP later bounced back to around $1.31, and I cut my losses and got out. My actual loss narrowed to just over $400, so I’d say I escaped by the skin of my teeth. This taught me a lesson: Intraday swings in major coins may look mild, but when you’re using leverage or holding a large position, a drop of just over 50 cents from $1.34 to $1.27 can be enough to wreck your nerves. My advice: Before entering a trade, write down your take-profit and stop-loss levels. You have to reduce your position near the high—don’t fool yourself with “the trend is still intact.” Also, crypto is increasingly correlated with U.S. stocks, so check Nasdaq futures before trading XRP. Don’t just stare at the candlestick chart. See you in the comments
