The Dow rose 1,569 points in a day, while AI stocks fell.
At the close on November 4, the Dow was up 3.03% at 53,356.12, its best day since April 9, 2025. The S&P 500 rose 1.58% to 7,688.62, and the Nasdaq gained 1.44% to 25,736.51.
Individual stocks went in completely opposite directions: Microsoft rose 6.68% to $555.80, Amazon gained 6.12% to $266.03, and Apple climbed 5.31% to $349.51, another record close (the previous record was $348.91 on October 29; its intraday high was $354.50). On the other side, Nvidia fell 3.12% to $200.24, Tesla dropped 3.34% to $385.19, and CoreWeave tumbled 9.90% to $48.42.
One useful takeaway: Media reports attributed the divergence to concerns about data-center regulation weighing on AI infrastructure stocks, but that was just the market’s interpretation of the day, not a definitive explanation. With the indexes up and AI stocks down, it wasn’t a day when everything rose or fell together—looking only at the indexes could give you the wrong impression of the AI stocks you hold.
When you see this kind of divergence—with the indexes up and AI stocks down—do you think investors are rotating into other holdings, or is the AI trade itself cooling off?
