Low Indicator Readings Don’t Confirm a Bottom: Decoding the Signals From BTC’s Cycle Extremes Index

My assessment is that the cycle extremes index and oscillator mentioned by CryptoQuant analyst CryptoZeno can only indicate that BTC’s market structure is cooling down; they cannot prove that selling pressure has been exhausted. This assessment holds as long as the readings remain low. If the index begins to rise steadily and pushes the oscillator above its threshold, the assessment would need to be revised.

First, the facts. According to a Nov. 5 report by PANews, CryptoZeno said the 30-day moving average of the Bitcoin Cycle Extremes Index had fallen to 15.8%, in the “watch/mild stress” range. The 30-day moving average of the Cycle Extremes Oscillator was near the bottom of its historical range and well below the 1.0 threshold, with no clear upward signal at present. BTC was trading around $80,000, about 46% below its previous all-time high. These are the analyst’s readings of the indicators—a single-source observation, not a market-wide consensus.

My observation is that these indicators measure how extreme the market structure is, not the direction of prices. A low index reading indicates that the market has not entered an active or extreme phase. Although the pullback has been substantial, the extreme conditions commonly seen at major turning points have yet to appear. In other words, a 46% decline describes the size of the drop, not whether sellers have been flushed out. Reading “low indicators” as “the bottom is in” mistakes a cooldown for a reversal.

Based on this, there are two possible scenarios. First, if the index continues to hover at low levels and the oscillator does not recover, the market is more likely to remain range-bound or even see another leg down. Second, the evidence would be more consistent with a bottoming thesis only if the Cycle Extremes Index continues to rise toward the active phase while the oscillator recovers and moves above its threshold. The material provided here shows neither of these signals.

The indicators to watch for confirmation are clear: whether the 30-day moving average of the Cycle Extremes Index continues to rise, and whether the oscillator shows a clear upward move and breaks above 1.0. As for the observation window, the material provided here gives only the current readings, not a historical series, so the pace of any recovery cannot be assessed. This is a limitation of the available material. Until these signals appear, I am more inclined to interpret the current conditions as a correction and a period of weakness, rather than a confirmed cycle bottom.
