📰 Why Is Crypto.com’s Exit from Hong Kong Such a Big Deal? Users Suddenly Have Fewer Choices

Crypto.com is shutting down its Hong Kong app on February 1. This is big news for Hong Kong’s crypto community: users have suddenly lost an option and need to find an alternative quickly, or their investment activities could become inconvenient.

Why does this news matter?
Put simply, Hong Kong’s regulations are too strict for Crypto.com to keep operating there. The crypto industry operates globally, but policies vary drastically from place to place, and Hong Kong has proven too difficult to navigate. Nasdaq had already issued licenses to crypto firms, while Hong Kong continues to hold its ground. No wonder Crypto.com wants to leave. Hong Kong wants to develop its crypto economy, but now it needs to figure out how to keep users from leaving. Having a blockchain hub alone isn’t enough.

Impact on the market
In the short term, Hong Kong users will need to find a new app, which could drive traffic to other platforms. In the long term, however, this exposes Hong Kong’s weakness: without openness, it’s hard to grow. Hong Kong needs to think carefully about whether to follow the regulatory approach used in California, US (launching ETFs and licensing major companies). If Hong Kong really wants to attract users from around the world, this app shutdown is a lesson.

What to do
For smaller holdings under HKD 80,000, this change won’t have much impact. But those with more than HKD 100,000 should quickly find a backup app rather than waiting until February 1. Hong Kong users can now only use the US version of the app, so they’ll need to adjust to different operating habits.
