AMD just reported, and Super Micro Computer has turned the tables.
$SMCI Q1 revenue came in at $19.9 billion, nearly triple year over year, sending shares up 9% premarket. To understand just how severe the server shortage is, look at AMD’s data center revenue, up 97%, and its Q4 guidance of $17 billion. There’s no sign of the AI infrastructure arms race slowing down.
What’s even more interesting is where the money is coming from. Meta issued euro-denominated bonds for the first time, drawing €53 billion in demand—a record. AI companies aren’t making money, but the whole world is clamoring to lend them money to burn. Google also dropped $15 billion to build data centers in Malaysia, while Qualcomm signed a deal with SpaceX to build tens of thousands of base stations for a direct-to-phone 5G network. They’re covering the skies and the ground.
Oil prices couldn’t hold up: Brent fell 5% intraday, dropping below $99 for the first time since October 6. With geopolitical tensions easing, markets are already pricing in “the end of the war”—not even an unexpected drop in EIA inventories could stop the slide.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s U.S. same-store sales turned negative. The harder the AI boom burns, the tighter ordinary people’s wallets get. The contrast really stands out.
BTC climbed back above 80,510, while $269 million in shorts were liquidated in one hour. But ADP employment came in at 86,000, above expectations, and markets are still pricing in a 70–80% chance of a December rate hike. Don’t get too carried away with how far this rebound can go.
