Zcash NU7 activates tomorrow: 25-second blocks aren’t automatically bullish—the real test comes after the upgrade
Zcash’s topic page on Binance Square currently shows about 5.9M views and 21,683 people discussing it. The conversation has shifted from “how much has ZEC risen?” to a specific date: NU7 is scheduled to activate at mainnet height 3,543,405, around November 5 Beijing time. The takeaway: this is a real network upgrade, but not a guaranteed ticket to a price increase.
Recent engineering updates from the Zcash Foundation confirm that Zebra 7.0.0 is the first stable release to support NU7 on mainnet; the official timeline sets the mainnet date for November 5. The scope recorded in ZIP 259 includes a 25-second target block interval, disabling v4 transactions, restricting some shielded activity, and the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM).
The most noticeable change for users is speed: the target block interval will drop from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, with the average wait for the first confirmation expected to shrink by about two-thirds. At the same time, official information says the daily ZEC issuance and the 21 million coin supply cap will remain unchanged; the upgrade is not a “halving” or a sudden reduction in circulating supply. Another easily overlooked change is that funds remaining in the old Sprout pool after the upgrade may no longer be spendable because v4 transactions will be disabled. This is more like an infrastructure migration deadline than a trading signal.

As of around 00:40 Beijing time, the latest Binance ZECUSDT spot price was about 1,319.34 USDT, up about 9.98% over 24 hours, with quote volume of about 252 million USDT. The latest price for the same pair’s USDⓈ-M perpetual contract was about 1,318.29, up about 9.93% over 24 hours, with quote volume of about 2.864 billion USDT, open interest of about 439,900 ZEC, and a funding rate of about +0.0100% per 8 hours. Spot and perpetual quote volumes are not directly comparable, and the perpetual’s higher volume alone does not prove that directional buying has increased.

The local chart’s 4-hour view of ZECUSDT shows the current price still above the 4-hour moving average group, but the latest candle has not yet closed. The visible chart range has a high of about 1,397.58 and a low of about 1,048.09. This screenshot only answers “where has the price moved?” It does not say whether NU7 will succeed, nor does it replace an official announcement. What’s more worth watching is whether the pre-upgrade rally can hold without a significant decline in spot volume. If it is driven mainly by perpetual leverage, volatility after the upgrade goes live could be greater than the event itself.
My view is that NU7’s medium-term value depends on three things: first, whether nodes, wallets, indexers, and trading platforms complete the upgrade smoothly; second, whether 25-second block times and greater shielded transaction capacity actually improve the user experience; and third, whether the ecosystem accepts NSM’s arrangements for fees and the network’s future security budget. Only as these indicators materialize over time could the technical upgrade translate into sustained demand. The words “activates tomorrow” alone are not enough to infer the direction of the price.
What could overturn this view? If the activation height or timing changes, or if the mainnet encounters problems with consensus, synchronization, wallet migration, or exchange support, the short-term narrative will cool immediately. Conversely, if the upgrade goes smoothly, reminders to migrate from the old Sprout pool are addressed, and spot volume and real-world usage continue to improve over the next few weeks, the market may have reason to reassess the upgrade’s long-term value. Both scenarios require data observed after the fact, rather than placing bets in advance.
