Ethereum tests transactions between rollups without bridges

📋 Summary
The Ethereum Economic Zone demonstrated operations between rollups and the mainnet executed as a single transaction, without a separate bridge step. The tests involved CoW Swap, Safe wallets, and a quantum-resistant signature, still in an experimental environment.

The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) presented three demonstrations of synchronized transactions between a rollup and the Ethereum mainnet on Wednesday (4) during Devcon in Mumbai. The proposal allows different parts of an operation to be completed together—or rolled back together—without requiring the user to make a separate transfer through a bridge.

The tests involved a trade through CoW Swap using mainnet liquidity, a coordinated change of signers in Safe wallets, and the verification of a post-quantum signature outside the main layer. Although still experimental, the technology targets one of the ecosystem’s main pain points: the fragmentation of assets, liquidity, and applications across second-layer networks.

CoW Swap accesses mainnet liquidity in a single operation

In the first demonstration, a user on a network identified as Rollup X signed a swap order. CoW Swap solvers sourced liquidity on Ethereum and returned the tokens to the rollup within the same transaction. According to EEZ’s official documentation, the goal is to let applications use shared liquidity without rebuilding the entire infrastructure on each network.

In practice, this design eliminates the traditional sequence for users of sending assets to a bridge, waiting for confirmations, and only then interacting with an application on another layer.
