The fear index is down to just 34. Pull back or press on? There’s no middle ground tonight. I’m on the press-on side. Money hasn’t left the market; it’s all rushing into high volatility. Tonight’s market structure is tailor-made to squeeze shorts. The more fearful the index gets, the more capital high volatility attracts. The numbers are clear today.
Fear drove a sell-off during the day. ZEC’s four-hour low hit 1,120, but funds didn’t pull out into the close. The price turned back up to around 1,280, touched an hourly high of 1,325, and only retraced to 1,158. It held near the top of the range the whole time, just a breath away from the high. Trading volume topped 200 million, leading the rally on heavy volume as this established strong performer scooped up the liquidity that had fled in fear. The weekly low was 250, and the current price is already more than five times that level. It’s also more than doubled overall this week. The previous high of 1,698 is still overhead, with plenty of room for volatility. That’s the kind of momentum that draws traders into strong coins.
BMT has squeezed the shorts into a wall. The funding rate has fallen to -1.09%, or -1,190% annualized, and the trade is now extremely crowded. Open interest has surged another 74%, with new shorts still piling in. The more negative the funding rate gets and the larger the short position grows, the shorter the fuse on a squeeze in the opposite direction. One spark is all it takes.
ZEC falling below 1,120 immediately invalidates the leading-coin rally. If 1,158 gives way again, tonight’s strength goes down with it. If BMT’s funding rate is quickly pulled back from -1.09%, shorts will no longer be crowded at an extreme, and the squeeze in the opposite direction is off the table too.
Shorts still thinking of adding to their positions while funding is negative? Sure—cover your own liquidation fees. At tonight’s poker table, the bulls have ZEC’s volume, and you’ve got a pile of shorts with negative funding. Don’t cry when the squeeze hits: you stacked the firewood, and you lit the match.
