【Funding Rate Hits the Cap for a Fifth Period: Longs Are Paying Rent, Not Collecting Dividends】

First, a detail that’s easy to overlook: $BTC ’s funding rate has now hit the cap for the fifth period in a row.
0.01000% is the funding rate cap for Binance perpetuals, settled every 8 hours, equivalent to 10.95% annualized.
In the last 12 periods, 10 hit the cap, with only two dips in between (0.00876%, 0.00912%). It hasn’t dropped once in the last 5 periods.
The takeaway is clear: long costs have been pushed to the ceiling, and haven’t let up once in 4 days.
The reversal in $ETH has been even sharper:
-0.00360% → -0.00308% → 0.00150% → -0.00103% → 0.00132% → -0.00044% → 0.00242% → 0.01000% → 0.01000% → 0.01000% → 0.00883% → 0.01000%
The period on the morning of 11-03 flipped straight to positive and hit the cap.
Two days ago, longs were still collecting money from shorts. Now they’re paying rent at the full rate—the whole direction has flipped.
Crowding has eased only slightly, with no meaningful relief:
BTC market-wide long/short ratio: 1.8137 (64.46% long); top-trader accounts: 1.9394; top-trader positions: 1.9259.
$ETH market-wide: 2.0893 (67.63% long); top-trader accounts: 1.6838.
Compared with half an hour ago, BTC market-wide went from 1.8393 to 1.8137, and $ETH from 2.1486 to 2.0893. Price has moved up noticeably faster than the long share has fallen.
Open interest tells the same story: $BTC is up 1.81%, while the number of contracts went from 10.03万 to 9.90万 (-1.32%) and the dollar value from 77.26亿 to 77.77亿; $ETH is up 2.76%, with contracts up 0.47%.
Mark vs. index: BTC -0.04%, $ETH -0.01%. There’s no premium, which suggests this wasn’t pushed up by spot buying.
Aggressive trading is also retreating:
The latest Taker reading (19:50) is 0.5225 for $BTC and 0.3852 for $ETH —sellers are in control of both.
The preceding readings swung up and down: BTC was at 1.4290 at 19:25, fell to 0.7092 at 19:35, bounced back to 1.3404 at 19:40, then ended at 0.5225; $ETH slid steadily from 1.7426 at 19:25 to 0.3852.
My take:
The cost of holding longs is rising, crowding hasn’t eased, and aggressive buying is retreating, while price is already at its 24-hour high.
A funding rate at the cap isn’t a short signal in itself. It’s more of a warning: these positions now carry a hard cost, and what they’re betting on is time, not price upside.
If the market really weakens, watch whether BTC can hold the 4-hour MA50 (78,582) and the upper edge of the 4-hour high-volume zone ($ETH 2,349.91). Only a break below those levels would show that this round of capped funding rates failed to bring in new longs.
This is not investment advice.
