After working overtime until 11, I opened my brokerage app, just planning to take a quick look at the closing prices.

But then I found myself staring at my holdings, and my mind started racing again: Should I make an extra investment this week? The market seems to be moving, too.

Then I realized something: the more tired I am, the easier it is to turn “just taking a look” into “making a move.” At the time, I thought I was perfectly clear-headed. Looking back the next morning, it just seemed unnecessary.

Now I’ve set myself a rule: after 10 p.m., I can look, but I can’t trade. It’s not that I understand the market better—I just know myself well enough to know I get impulsive at night.

When you’re busy late into the night and not feeling your best, do you still make trades? Or do you also save them for when you’re clear-headed?
