Ethereum has quietly hit a major milestone in addressing the quantum threat — and the target is sooner than the old timeline.

Facts: Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake announced on Nov. 3 at Devcon 8 in Mumbai that leanVM — a minimal zero-knowledge-based virtual machine designed to aggregate hash-based post-quantum signatures (leanXMSS, a potential replacement for BLS at the consensus layer) — has achieved end-to-end formal verification, with the ability to handle more than 1,000 aggregations per second. The new target: a full post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028, ahead of the old 2029 roadmap, covering the consensus, data, and execution layers.

My take: This isn’t an upgrade that’s live today, and it’s important to be honest about that — the repo itself still marks verification as "in progress" and isn’t production-ready yet. But the direction is what’s interesting: Ethereum is preparing its defenses before the quantum threat becomes real, not after. With ETH still hovering around $2,303 today, I read news like this as a long-term investment in the network, not a catalyst for tomorrow morning’s price.

What I’m watching: the next series of forks (Glamsterdam, Hegotá, then I* and J*) and whether these verification claims are fully reflected in the repo and progress toward production.

Do you think this quantum preparedness is enough of a reason to have more confidence in ETH over the long term, or is it still too far off to factor in?

This is my analysis, not financial advice — always DYOR.
