Palantir Q3 revenue surged 96%, yet the stock fell: What is the market really afraid of?
Q3 results released after market close on 11-02 beat expectations across the board: revenue of $2.313 billion, up 96% year over year and above the market estimate of $2.18 billion; adjusted EPS of $0.44, above the $0.40 expected; and net income of $1.13 billion, more than doubling. The biggest highlight was U.S. commercial revenue of $984 million, up 148%—surpassing government revenue for the first time in the company’s history. AI is generating real-world revenue. The company also raised its full-year revenue guidance to above $8.53 billion, while Q4 guidance of $2.65 billion also topped expectations.
But the stock fell more than 5% at one point after hours, then closed at $175.4 on 11-03 (-1.65%), down nearly 12% over the past five trading days. The issue isn’t “now,” but “the future”: the value of new contracts signed during the quarter was $2.918 billion, up just 6% year over year, versus +49% in Q2. Revenue is being realized from past deals, while the pipeline is replenished much more slowly. The Q4 guidance implies sequential growth of about 15%, also below last year’s 20%. For a company trading at 146 times earnings, the market has zero tolerance for slowing growth.
The logic is clear: ① The commercialization inflection point is real (commercial revenue surpassing government revenue for the first time is a milestone); ② But the valuation has already priced in “acceleration forever,” and the reversal in contract pipeline growth marks the beginning of a loosening valuation anchor; ③ In the short term, the key question is whether the contract pipeline can recover in Q4; in the medium term, it’s whether U.S. commercial AI adoption can expand from large enterprises to mid-sized customers.
Risks: Valuation has very little room for error, and slowing growth could be priced in quickly; government business remains subject to budget-cycle fluctuations; if large commercial deals are highly concentrated, quarterly volatility could be amplified.
