WHY DOES BLOCKCHAIN NEED TENS OF MILLIONS OF TPS? AI AGENTS COULD BE THE ANSWER.
When millions of AI agents buy data, call APIs, trade, and make payments simultaneously, demand could far exceed what human activity generates.
Two developments I’m watching:
1️⃣ Sui achieved over 40 million TPS through Sui tunnels in a stress test. These channels process activity offchain and settle on mainnet. This is not direct Layer 1 throughput.
Sui also has notable DeFi activity. According to the shared DefiLlama figures, @CetusProtocol accounted for roughly 42% of Sui’s DEX volume over 30 days: $383.22M out of $913.16M. Seven-day volume reached $64.24M.
That shows existing trading activity, but it doesn’t establish demand from AI agents.
2️⃣ Celestia Voyager targets payments for individual agent interactions, with a benchmark of around 21 million TPS. However, this was a single-node test, not a demonstration of a complete network’s performance.
For me, the key question goes beyond “How fast is the blockchain?” to “Who will use it and pay for it?”
$SUI and $TIA are worth watching as the Agentic Economy develops. But an investment thesis needs real demand, revenue, and a mechanism that brings value back to the token.
TPS shows capacity. Users and money flows are the real test.
